About the BBS Math Department
Mathematics is one way of trying to understand, interpret and describe our world. There are number of components that define the nature of mathematics and these are merged throughout our program.
Our purpose is to prepare our learners to develop critical thinking and quantitative analysis skills. The students will gain mathematical language and skills through making connections between concepts and processes.
Making Math Easier
Grade-Specific Programs
Grade 1
By the end of the school year, students should be able to count forward and backward from 1-50. This will help with the addition and subtraction strategies that they will learn. Addition and subtraction strategies include: counting, using commutative properties of addition and counting up for subtraction. In addition to this, students will learn the addition of doubles from zero to ten. They will also learn how to compare groups of numbers using greater or less than, and draw models using both addition and subtraction.
Analyzing and comparing data shown in a tally chart will also be taught as well as measuring objects using nonstandard measuring tools. In geometry, students will decompose shapes into parts. Last, students will be able to retell the time to the hour and half hour.
Grades 2 & 3
By the end of the year, Grade 2 & 3 learners should be able to:
• Understand Meanings Of Operations
• Compute Fluently
• Make Reasonable Estimates
• Identify Patterns
• Recognize Regular Geometric Shapes And Their Characteristics
• Connect Geometry Concepts To Everyday Situations
• Comprehend Measurement
• Interpret And Analyze Data
• Solve & Evaluate Problems
