Grade-Specific Programs

Grade 1

By the end of grade one, students will acquire phonics, writing, grammar, and comprehension skills. Phonics include blending, reading, and building words with short and long vowels and diphthongs with vowels and consonants. The comprehension skills encompass the ability to compare and contrast, identify the author’s purpose, analyze the characters of a story, infer, predict, and draw conclusions. Students will also learn how to retell a story using the sequence of events and identify the story elements and its main ideas and details.

As for grammar, students will be able to identify and use nouns, adjectives, parts of a sentence, kinds of a sentence, subject/verb agreement, pronouns, and verb tenses. Ultimately, first graders will be able to acquire writing skills in writing sentences and letters, narrating idea, filling in graphic organizers, and constructing statements with description.

Grades 2 & 3

The Goals of the Year:

This year, we will work on customizing and tailoring our teaching methods to differentiate instruction. We will diversify the complexity of the curriculum to meet each student’s needs. Thus, we will use a variety of grouping strategies and provide tiered projects.

By the end of the year, students should be able to:
  • Read grade level texts fluently using appropriate rhythm, pace, phrasing, punctuation and intonation. They should be able to apply phonics, structural analysis, and word recognition skills to decode and understand words.
  • Use comprehension strategies to understand a text. They should exhibit the behaviors and the habits of active readers by reading different texts for enjoyment and critical thinking.
  • Extend their understanding of spoken discourse, recall specific
    information, and follow oral instructions.
  • Compose a unified and a coherent paragraph that has a topic
sentence, three supporting details, and a clincher sentence. They should use transitional words and correct mechanics and grammar.
  • Speak confidently and present ideas using appropriate tone, expressions, and diction.

Grade 4

By the end of grade 4, students will be able to:
  • Read and comprehend literary and informational texts in the grade 4 complexity independently and proficiently.
  • Write a unified, well supported and coherent paragraph (narrative,
how to, compare/contrast, persuasive, and descriptive).
  • Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one on one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
  • Acquire effective strategies for enhancing active listening skills.

Grade 5

By the end of grade 5, students will be able to:
  • Read and comprehend literary and informational texts with grade 5 complexity independently and proficiently.
  • Write a unified, well supported and coherent essay (descriptive and cause/effect).
  • Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
  • Acquire effective strategies for enhancing active listening skills.
